With summer 2009 promising to be the hottest for several years, it is time for us girls to get out our legs and show them off in combination with the latest on-trend ensembles.
For those with the confidence to reveal their legs in all their glory thigh-high mini dresses are definitely on-trend. Taking their inspiration from the dresses worn by all-girl bands strappy contrasting panel fronts or strapless sailor-type dresses will definitely be on show during the summer. These should ideally be worn with bare legs, with bronzer added if not naturally tanned. But for cooler evenings fine sheer tights or opaques will complete the leg look.
Those less inclined to reveal that much leg can opt for the latest above-the-knee pencil skirt. This perennial favourite has been re-invented with a mid-to-high waist, in bold colours and is ideal for work or smart casual dress.
Something new for this summer and promising to be all the rage is ‘jeggings’! These are skin-tight denim leggings in various colours but most popularly blue or grey. Firmly hugging the leg, from a distance it is difficult to tell them from traditional leggings or even opaque tights. These go with just about anything, but especially with printed vest tops. In terms of footwear ankle boots are this summer’s must-have, especially when it comes to wearing jeggings.
Shorts are a summer staple and this summer denim is back in fashion. Available in varying lengths from hot-pants to just above the knee, at least one pair of these should be in your wardrobe this summer. However, unlike recent summers this year’s trend is to ditch the tights with shorts look and go for bare legs.
Bright colours and metallic accessories add the finishing touches to this summer’s women’s clothing essentials. Metal studs and spikes will be especially prevalent this summer on everything from belts to boots and definitely leather jackets.
Of course, even though summer fashion includes many items that show off legs, there are also less revealing alternatives that will be just as on-trend. Floral, below-the-knee dresses will also be featured this summer, especially by designers who have taken their inspiration from the African tribal look.
Additionally, single colour jumpsuits will be coveted this summer and for those not comfortable showing off their pins then this will be the ideal fashionable alternative.
But, regardless of the prevalent styles this summer the message is mix and match. Take what is available and make your own stylish ensembles. Comfort is the priority in what promises to be a scorching summer.
